Story
In this holiday home, charred wood in its different tones lives alongside the surrounding archipelago nature. A continuous ceiling cladding that runs from inside to outside, and decks that grey beautifully, tie the building naturally into the landscape.
The eye is drawn to the interior ceilings and the soffit boarding, made with the lightest of our charred-wood products, Kuura. Kuura is made by first charring the wood, then washing and brushing it vigorously, after which white-tinted linseed oil is absorbed into the wood. Natural light flooding in illuminates the wood’s expressive grain beautifully, and as the surface is exposed to UV it slowly lightens to an even clearer tone.
Indoors, the pale Kuura is balanced by deep black Hiili panels with a charred surface, used as accent walls in the sleeping area and on the wall leading to the WC and washroom. The rough black surface that turns heads works as a beautiful contrast and a clear transition from one space to the next.
The dark character continues in the shore sauna, where the benches are made from black-tinted Noki planks and the backrests and footrest from Noki boards.
Outdoors, our widest Kelo board comes into its own on the decks, stairs and paths that edge the buildings. The boards meet the sea weather and the sunlight calmly and patinate quickly to a beautiful grey. It is a pleasure to walk barefoot from one space to the next, because the charred and brushed Kelo surface feels velvety underfoot.
