Hiil – wood made better
Hiil was born from the desire to make better use of wasted resources, for the benefit of both nature and people. To us, every piece of wood is a valuable part of the natural world and an opportunity to create something beautiful. By charring the wood’s surface, we enhance its appearance and give new life to wood that would otherwise be discarded. We believe that every company, organisation and individual should make more sustainable and less resource-intensive choices. Hiil wood is our way of bringing about a more beautiful and ethical world.
In the beginning: a master carpenter’s insight
It all began with a question posed to Miikka, Hiil’s founder: What could be done with the wood waste from bridge construction sites, saturated with sand and concrete?
We experimented with a familiar technique from our carpentry workshop – burning the wood’s surface – and discovered that charring and washing removed the excess layer, revealing a beautiful and usable core. This experiment quickly evolved into a full-fledged business. Now, previously wasted wood from the sawmill and construction industries can be repurposed for building.

Our part in a sustainable future

Our production uses mostly the wood’s own energy and generates no waste. We use even the smallest by-products from our processes. Every charred board or panel is proof that sustainability can be at the core of business operations.
