Story
This sauna started from a straightforward goal: the homeowner wanted to create a smoke sauna-like atmosphere — a space where you feel yourself unwind the moment the door closes behind you. The material choice guided the project from the very beginning. With the wall panels and ceiling finished in Hiili charred wood, the sauna gained a surface that feels both timeless and distinctive.
What makes Hiili work so well here is its character. The charred surface is deep and immediately recognisable, yet it never feels harsh or clinical. The subtle texture left by the charring process gives it life. When light hits the surface, it doesn’t simply get absorbed — it reflects and shifts in tone depending on the angle. The result is an atmosphere that is both dim and warm at the same time, exactly the quality that a smoke sauna-inspired space calls for.
Light-toned wood on the benches and backrests brings rhythm and scale to the room. The dark surfaces provide depth while the pale wood offers breathing room. Together they make the sauna feel clear and harmonious without becoming sterile. The backrests were made from the same bench material — a recommendation we give to reduce mechanical stress on the wall panels and ensure long-term durability.
At its core, charring is about improving wood with fire. The process gives the surface a natural resistance to moisture, making it suitable for demanding long-term use without any need for chemical treatments.
