Charred roof terrace

Story

Design studio Amerikka built itself a new, ecological office in a space that had previously been a bank. The change was made through workshops, and the result is intended as an everyday workspace and also as a test lab where different solutions and materials get real use.

Our part in the project was on the roof. Hiil supplied the roof terrace decking, with Kaarna chosen as the surface. Kaarna is a charred and brushed surface finished with clear oil. It feels pleasant underfoot and looks alive, because the brushing brings out the wood grain and the char in a controlled way.

A roof terrace is both forgiving and demanding. It is partly sheltered but still outdoors. That is why Kaarna suits it well. When the terrace is protected from the worst weather and the surface is kept oiled, it stays clean and practical for a long time, and over time it develops a natural, calm patina suited to outdoor use.
