Hiil Oy founders Miikka and Joona Kotilainen

The Hiil story began with a tough question

It all started with a question most people had never thought to ask. In 2022, master carpenter Miikka received an email asking if he could find uses for timber from a bridge construction site — wood saturated with concrete and sand, condemned as waste. Miikka decided to try the ancient Japanese art of wood charring on this worthless material. When the flames did their work and the surface was cleaned, something beautiful emerged: the wood grain was strikingly visible and the material had a beautiful, toasted surface.

Fire no longer destroyed wood — it saved it.

Charred wood in architecture – Halo Igloos

CircuWood™

We don't see wood knots, colour defects, or blue stain as major problems. We can often process timber that would otherwise end up as wood chips and fuel. CircuWood™ is our promise that sawmill industry side streams don't end up in incinerators, but rise to their full value in building facades, atmospheric saunas, and modern homes.

Circular economy is not a buzzword for us — it's the foundation of our entire existence. We don't just manufacture wood. We ensure that felled trees are used down to the last fibre in long-term beneficial use.

Hiil wood charring process – charring at over 1000 degrees

We developed our own charring method: over 1000 degrees powered by the wood's own energy

Our patentable technology is a modern version of tradition. We char wood with its own energy at over a thousand degrees. It's a fierce, fast process that hardens the surface, removes decay nutrients, and creates an aesthetic carbon layer.

After that, we finish the product with nutrient-free special linseed oil that penetrates deep into the warm cell structure.

Let's build stories that last

Hiil wood is made for those who dare to choose differently. For architects seeking a surface with soul. For builders who demand ecology without compromising aesthetics. We don't just offer building materials. We offer a way to build a more responsible world where beauty and durability go hand in hand.
