An example of circular economy

The raw material consists primarily of Finnish spruce and pine, originally marked by dents, unsuitable knot quality, discolouration, or failing to meet the structural strength requirements for framework construction. However, by charring the surface, this material can be cleaned and repurposed as cladding products. Once charred, CircuWood™ products are virtually indistinguishable from standard grade A sawn wood that has also been charred.

If not used for cladding, this wood would be destined for short-term applications or burnt for energy, releasing the carbon stored in the wood into the atmosphere.

The manufacturing of CircuWood™ products relies on the wood’s own energy, with eco-friendly biogas made from food waste used as an ignition source.

By using CircuWood™ products and the wood charring process, we give potential waste wood a new, longer life. If successful on a large scale, we will create more long-lasting carbon stores, improve the utilisation rate of sawn wood and enable forests to grow for longer periods.

CircuWood™ is a registered trademark of Hiil Oy, referring to the company’s charred wood products manufactured from waste wood.
